Fathead Minnows

Fathead Minnows are a good choice for forage fish in a pond.  They are a small fish that only reaches 3 inches in length.  They reproduce throughout the summer months and attach their eggs to the underside of objects.  Structure should be made available to help give them a safe place to lay.  We have used pallets but tires, branches, or something similar will work as well.  They help keep bluegill populations healthy, which in turn will keep your larger predator fish healthy.  Once your predator fish get larger in size, they can quickly decimate the minnow population, so periodical restocking is recommended.  We recommend 10 pounds per surface acre generally.  More may be needed depending on the predator fish condition.
