Rainbow Trout for Pond Stocking in Oklahoma

Seasonal Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout provide excellent cold-weather fishing and are a popular seasonal addition to Oklahoma ponds.

Moore’s Fish Farm typically offers rainbow trout beginning around mid-November, with availability continuing through the winter season while supplies and suitable temperatures last.

A Cold-Weather Pond Fish

Rainbow trout thrive in cold water, making them an excellent option for enjoying your pond during the winter months when many warm-water fish are less active.

They are popular for:

  • Winter pond fishing
  • Family fishing
  • Recreational fishing
  • Excellent table fare
  • Supplemental feeding
  • Adding seasonal variety to your pond

When Are Rainbow Trout Available?

Our rainbow trout season typically begins around mid-November.

Exact availability can vary from year to year depending on weather, water temperatures and supply.

Because trout are seasonal, we recommend checking with Moore’s Fish Farm for current availability before making a trip.

Why Stock Rainbow Trout?

Rainbow trout are aggressive feeders and excellent fighters, providing an entirely different fishing experience during the colder months.

They readily take bait and artificial lures, making them especially fun for families and anglers looking for winter fishing opportunities.

They also make excellent table fare.

Feeding Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout readily accept commercial floating fish feed.

Supplemental feeding can help maintain good condition and growth throughout the winter.

Feeding also brings trout to the surface and can make them an enjoyable fish to watch during the colder months.

Will Rainbow Trout Survive the Summer?

Rainbow trout require cold, well-oxygenated water.

In most Oklahoma ponds, summer water temperatures become too warm for trout to survive year-round.

For this reason, rainbow trout should generally be considered a seasonal fish to enjoy during the cooler months.

Many pond owners stock trout in the fall and winter with the goal of catching and harvesting them before water temperatures rise.

Can Trout Live With Other Pond Fish?

Yes. Rainbow trout can be seasonally stocked in many ponds containing common species such as largemouth bass, bluegill and catfish.

The existing fish population, particularly large predators, can influence what size trout should be stocked.

If you're unsure whether trout are appropriate for your pond, contact us before ordering.

How Many Rainbow Trout Should I Stock?

The appropriate number depends on pond size, fishing pressure, feeding plans and how many people will be fishing.

As a general recommendation, you can stock up to 100 fish per acre.
