Largemouth Bass for Pond Stocking in Oklahoma

Largemouth Bass for Pond Stocking

Largemouth bass are the primary sport fish in many Oklahoma ponds and lakes. Moore’s Fish Farm offers Native Largemouth Bass and F1 Florida Largemouth Bass for pond stocking.

Whether you're establishing a new pond or improving an existing fishery, choosing the right bass and maintaining a strong forage base are important for producing healthy, fast-growing fish.

Native Largemouth Bass

Native largemouth bass are well suited for Oklahoma ponds and our changing seasonal temperatures.

They are an excellent choice for pond owners looking to establish a balanced bass and bluegill fishery and provide dependable recreational fishing.

Native largemouth bass are commonly stocked with bluegill, redear sunfish and fathead minnows to establish a strong forage base.

F1 Florida Largemouth Bass

F1 Florida largemouth bass are a first-generation cross between Florida-strain and Northern-strain largemouth bass.

The goal of the F1 cross is to combine desirable characteristics from both strains. Florida genetics are known for their potential to produce trophy-size bass, while Northern genetics are well adapted to a wider range of conditions.

F1 bass are a popular choice for pond owners whose goal is growing larger trophy bass.

Native vs. F1 Florida Bass

Which bass is right for your pond depends largely on your goals.

Native Largemouth Bass are a great choice for a traditional, balanced Oklahoma fishing pond.

F1 Florida Largemouth Bass are often selected when producing larger, trophy-quality bass is a primary goal.

Regardless of which bass you choose, the quality and quantity of available forage will have a major impact on bass growth.

Building a Forage Base

A healthy bass pond starts with plenty of food.

Bluegill are the backbone of the forage population in most largemouth bass ponds. Depending on the pond and management goals, additional forage species may include:

  • Bluegill
  • Redear Sunfish
  • Fathead Minnows
  • Golden Shiners
  • Tilapia

For new ponds, forage fish are generally established before largemouth bass are introduced, giving them time to reproduce and build a population.

How Many Bass Should I Stock?

Stocking rates depend on pond size, existing fish populations and your goals for the pond.

A pond managed for trophy bass may be stocked and managed differently than a pond intended primarily for family fishing.

Contact Moore’s Fish Farm with your pond size and goals, and we can help you develop an appropriate stocking plan.

Stocking an Existing Pond?

Adding bass to an established pond is different from stocking a new pond.

Existing bass, bluegill and other fish can affect both survival and the size of bass that should be stocked. If you're adding fish to an existing pond, let us know what species and approximate sizes are already present so we can help determine the best approach.

Need Help Planning Your Pond?

Every pond is different. Pond size, existing fish populations and your fishing goals all influence what and how many fish should be stocked.

Contact Moore’s Fish Farm and we'll help you build a stocking plan for your pond.
