Blue Catfish for Pond Stocking in Oklahoma

Blue Catfish for Pond Stocking

Blue catfish are a popular choice for pond and lake owners looking for a hard-fighting catfish with the potential to reach impressive sizes.

Moore’s Fish Farm offers blue catfish for stocking ponds and lakes throughout Oklahoma and the surrounding region.

Why Stock Blue Catfish?

Blue catfish can be an exciting addition to larger ponds and lakes, especially when producing larger sport fish is part of the management goal.

They are known for:

  • Excellent growth potential
  • Large adult size
  • Strong fighting ability
  • Recreational fishing
  • Excellent table fare
  • Feeding on a variety of natural forage

Blue catfish become increasingly predatory as they grow and should be considered part of the predator population when planning a balanced fishery.

Blue Catfish vs. Channel Catfish

Although both species are popular for pond stocking, blue catfish and channel catfish have some important differences.

Channel Catfish are commonly stocked in a wide variety of ponds, readily accept commercial feed and are an excellent choice for family fishing and food production.

Blue Catfish have greater potential to reach very large sizes and become more strongly predatory as they mature.

Your pond size, existing fish population and fishing goals can help determine which species is the better choice.

What Do Blue Catfish Eat?

Young blue catfish consume insects, aquatic organisms and other small food items.

As they grow, fish become an increasingly important part of their diet. Larger blue catfish can consume bluegill, shad and other available forage fish.

Maintaining an adequate forage population is important when managing a pond or lake containing larger blue catfish.

Can Blue Catfish Live With Bass and Bluegill?

Yes. Blue catfish can be stocked in waters containing largemouth bass, bluegill and other common pond fish.

However, because both blue catfish and largemouth bass are predators, the amount of available forage becomes increasingly important as these fish grow.

A strong forage base helps support healthy growth and reduces excessive competition for food.

Do Blue Catfish Reproduce in Ponds?

Blue catfish can reproduce when suitable spawning habitat is available, but successful reproduction and survival of young fish can vary greatly between ponds.

Predation from largemouth bass and other fish can greatly reduce the number of young blue catfish that survive.

Periodic restocking may be necessary depending on harvest and management goals.

Stocking an Existing Pond

When stocking blue catfish into a pond containing established largemouth bass or other large predators, stocking size is important.

Smaller catfish may quickly become prey.

Tell us what species and approximate sizes are already present so we can help recommend an appropriate stocking size.

How Many Blue Catfish Should I Stock?

Stocking rates depend on pond or lake size, existing fish populations, available forage and your management goals.

Because blue catfish can grow into large predators, they should be stocked with the long-term balance of the pond in mind.

You can stock 75-150 depending on your goals and existing fish populations.

Managing Blue Catfish

Growing quality blue catfish requires adequate food and good pond conditions.

Management considerations include:

  • Maintaining a strong forage population
  • Proper stocking rates
  • Monitoring predator numbers
  • Regular harvest
  • Good water quality
  • Periodic restocking when necessary

Good population management becomes increasingly important as blue catfish grow larger.
