Hybrid bluegill are a popular choice for pond owners looking for fast-growing, aggressive fish that provide excellent recreational fishing.
Moore’s Fish Farm offers hybrid bluegill for stocking new and existing ponds throughout Oklahoma and the surrounding region.
Hybrid bluegill are produced by crossing two different sunfish species. They are known for their fast growth, aggressive feeding behavior and willingness to bite.
Because of these characteristics, hybrid bluegill can be an excellent choice for ponds managed primarily for fishing.
Hybrid bluegill offer several advantages for pond owners:
They readily accept commercial fish feed, making them especially well suited for ponds where supplemental feeding is part of the management plan.
Hybrid bluegill and regular bluegill serve different purposes in a pond.
Regular bluegill reproduce heavily and are commonly used as the primary forage base for largemouth bass.
Hybrid bluegill have more limited reproduction and are generally stocked for their growth and fishing qualities rather than as the primary forage fish in a bass pond.
If your goal is establishing a traditional bass and bluegill fishery, regular bluegill may be the better choice.
If your goal is growing larger bluegill for recreational fishing, hybrid bluegill may be an excellent option.
Hybrid bluegill can reproduce, but their reproduction is considerably more limited than regular bluegill.
Because of this, hybrid bluegill populations may need to be periodically restocked to maintain good numbers of fish.
This limited reproduction is also why we generally don't recommend relying on hybrid bluegill alone to provide the forage base for a heavily managed largemouth bass population.
Hybrid bluegill respond very well to supplemental feeding.
A quality floating fish feed can increase growth rates and give pond owners the opportunity to watch their fish feed at the surface.
Consistent feeding combined with proper stocking and population management can produce excellent-sized hybrid bluegill.
Stocking rates depend on pond size, existing fish populations and your goals.
A new pond managed primarily for hybrid bluegill may require a different stocking plan than an established pond where hybrid bluegill are being added for additional recreational fishing.
Contact Moore’s Fish Farm with your pond size and current fish population, and we can help determine an appropriate stocking rate.
