Grass Carp for Pond Stocking in Oklahoma

Grass Carp for Pond Stocking in Oklahoma

Grass carp are one of the most popular fish used for controlling unwanted aquatic vegetation in ponds and lakes. At Moore’s Fish Farm, we provide triploid grass carp for pond owners throughout Oklahoma and the surrounding region.

Triploid grass carp are sterile and are commonly stocked as a long-term, biological option for managing certain types of pond vegetation.

Why Stock Grass Carp?

Grass carp can help control many types of submerged aquatic vegetation by feeding directly on growing plants.

They can be a good option for pond owners who want to:

  • Reduce excessive aquatic vegetation
  • Improve access for fishing and recreation
  • Help keep pond areas open
  • Reduce reliance on repeated vegetation treatments
  • Add long-term biological weed control to a pond-management plan

Grass carp do not eat every type of aquatic plant, so identifying the vegetation in your pond is important before deciding whether grass carp are the right solution.  They work particularly well for rooted vegetation.

How Many Grass Carp Do I Need?

The correct stocking rate depends on the amount and type of vegetation in the pond—not simply the size of the pond.

A pond with light vegetation may need considerably fewer grass carp than a pond that is heavily covered.

Don't automatically overstock. Grass carp can become very effective as they grow, and stocking too many can remove more vegetation than desired.

Not sure how many you need? Contact Moore’s Fish Farm and tell us your pond size and what kind of vegetation problem you're dealing with. Photos of the vegetation can also be helpful.

How Long Does It Take Grass Carp to Control Weeds?

Grass carp are a long-term pond-management tool, not an instant treatment.

How quickly they control vegetation depends on several factors, including:

  • Number of fish stocked
  • Size of the grass carp
  • Type of vegetation
  • Amount of vegetation present
  • Pond conditions
  • Water temperature

Control generally improves as the fish become established and grow.

Will Grass Carp Reproduce in My Pond?

The grass carp sold for pond stocking are triploid grass carp, meaning they are sterile and cannot reproduce in your pond.

Triploid grass carp are tested to verify their triploid status before being sold for stocking.

Can Grass Carp Live With Bass, Bluegill and Catfish?

Yes. Grass carp are commonly stocked in ponds containing largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish and other common pond fish.

Their primary purpose in the pond is vegetation management rather than establishing a reproducing forage population.

Young grass carp can be vulnerable to predators, particularly largemouth bass, which is one reason the size of fish stocked can be important in established ponds.
