Channel Catfish for Pond Stocking in Oklahoma

Channel Catfish for Pond Stocking

Channel catfish are one of the most popular fish for Oklahoma ponds. They grow well, readily accept commercial fish feed and provide excellent fishing and table fare.

Moore’s Fish Farm offers channel catfish in multiple sizes for stocking new and existing ponds.

Why Stock Channel Catfish?

Channel catfish are a versatile addition to many ponds and lakes.

They are a great choice for:

  • Recreational fishing
  • Family fishing ponds
  • Producing fish for the table
  • Supplemental feeding programs
  • New and established ponds
  • Stocking alongside bass and bluegill

With good water quality, adequate forage and supplemental feeding, channel catfish can grow quickly and reach excellent sizes.

Feeding Channel Catfish

Channel catfish readily accept commercial floating fish feed.

Supplemental feeding is one of the best ways to increase growth and fish production in ponds managed for catfish.

Floating feed also allows pond owners to observe their fish, monitor feeding activity and enjoy watching them feed at the surface.

Can Channel Catfish Live With Bass and Bluegill?

Yes. Channel catfish are commonly stocked alongside largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish and other pond fish.

Because channel catfish occupy a different role in the pond than bass and bluegill, they can be an excellent addition to a balanced recreational fishery.

Do Channel Catfish Reproduce in Ponds?

Channel catfish can reproduce in ponds, particularly when suitable spawning cavities are available.

However, successful recruitment can be limited in ponds containing largemouth bass because young catfish are vulnerable to predation.

For this reason, many managed ponds are periodically restocked with channel catfish to replace fish that have been harvested.

Stocking an Existing Pond

When adding channel catfish to a pond that already contains largemouth bass, stocking size is important.

Small catfish can become prey for larger bass before they have an opportunity to grow.

If your pond already contains predator fish, let us know their approximate size so we can help recommend an appropriate size of channel catfish.

How Many Channel Catfish Should I Stock?

The correct stocking rate depends on your pond size, existing fish population, feeding program and how intensively you plan to fish and harvest catfish.

A pond managed primarily for catfish may be stocked differently than a traditional bass-bluegill pond where catfish are an additional fishing species.

Contact Moore’s Fish Farm with your pond size and goals, and we can help recommend an appropriate stocking plan.

Growing Bigger Catfish

Good growth requires adequate food and good pond conditions.

  • Supplemental feeding
  • Proper stocking rates
  • Good water quality
